Research Scientist – Fluid Mechanics Scientist (Well Construction Hydrodynamics)

We are seeking a talented, creative scientist with expertise in experimental fluid mechanics to work in our multidisciplinary team charged with developing novel solutions for the wide range of processes involving the flow of non-Newtonian fluids during hydrocarbon well construction. Challenges involve particle transport and dynamics in dense suspensions, fluid-fluid mixing and displacement, and characterization of particle-laden non-Newtonian fluids.
Job Description
The successful Research Scientist will develop new experimental facilities and techniques for the characterization of flow and displacement of particle-laden fluids, assessing the impact of rheology on fluid placement and particle transport in complex geometries such as long eccentered annular spaces or irregular formation fractures. The work will require multi-physics skills, insight, and creative experiment design to capture complex and often poorly understood real-world phenomena in model laboratory-scale systems.
The candidate will join a team of other experimentalists, modellers, and numerical simulation experts working in the same area. His or her role will involve making significant individual technical contributions, providing technical leadership, and working closely with other team members in order to maximize the effectiveness of the overall research effort. Excellent communication skills are required for efficient knowledge sharing within the team, with other Schlumberger research and product centers, and with management.
Responsibilities
Conceives, develops and tests concepts for fluid-fluid displacement and particle-laden fluid characterization. Works with other team members to transfer technologies to Schlumberger product centers and operations. Provides technical leadership throughout the team and beyond. Maintains and expands knowledge of fluid mechanics, complex rheology, multi-physics measurement technologies and related fields. Publishes research papers in refereed literature, writes and presents internal technical reports and patents. Makes recommendations on research directions, involved in communication of results to management at all levels.
Qualifications
PhD degree in fluid mechanics, physics, chemical engineering or related field, with significant experimental fluid mechanics content including development of apparatus and techniques. Experimental experience in one or more of the following areas: multiphase flow, non-Newtonian fluid mechanics, complex rheologies, solids-laden flows, fluid-fluid displacement, laminar flows. A record of significant independent technical contributions in a relevant field. Ability to interact productively with scientists and engineers from diverse technical backgrounds. A record of independently putting knowledge and skills to constructive use, in original situations and to poorly-specified problems.
